Description

Notable for displaying an extra eyelid below Lincoln's normal eyelid, WDDO-003 is among the more visually distinctive doubled die obverse varieties on the 1959-D Lincoln Memorial cent. The Wexler designation is 1959-D 1¢ WDDO-003. This obverse die also carries a minor repunched mintmark cataloged in the Wexler RPM Files as 1959-D 1¢ WRPM-050, described as a D/D tilted (rotated) showing on the lower serif, making this a dual-variety die of interest to both DDO and RPM specialists. On the reverse, a short die scratch extends from the bottom right of the M in AMERICA, and a short vertical die scratch can be found to the left of the top of the E in AMERICA. The extra eyelid feature is best observed under 10x or greater magnification and represents doubling on one of the finest details of Victor David Brenner's portrait design. Collectors who locate the eyelid doubling should also examine the mintmark for the tilted repunch, as confirming both varieties on a single coin significantly enhances its attribution interest.
