1958 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-001
Error
Description
Holding the primary DDO designation for the 1958 proof Roosevelt Dime, this VarietyVista-cataloged variety exhibits medium extra thickness on the date, designer's initials, and TRUST. The designer's initials — JS for John R. Sinnock, who created the Roosevelt Dime obverse — appear at the truncation of Roosevelt's neck, and the medium extra thickness on these small engraved letters provides a particularly crisp diagnostic because the fine detail of initials amplifies even modest hub displacement into visible broadening. The date and TRUST offer additional confirmation points, with TRUST being the final word of the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. Die markers UVC-306 and DMR-005 identify the working die, which is further classified as Obverse Die Variety ODV-006. Three die stages are documented: Stage A in early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B in mid-die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C with both obverse and reverse in confirmed late die state. As a proof issue, this coin was struck on specially polished planchets with polished dies at the Philadelphia Mint in 90% silver at 2.5 grams — among the final silver proof dimes before the 1965 compositional transition. Examine the date, the JS initials at the neck truncation, and TRUST for the medium extra thickness that defines this primary DDO attribution.
