1958 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-002

Description

Documented by VarietyVista, this 1958 Lincoln Wheat Cent DDO-002 shows hub doubling from misalignment during die manufacture, struck at Philadelphia during the final year of the wheat ears reverse. Die markers UVC-1932 / DMR-004 track three stages: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B at MDS (unconfirmed); Stage C at LDS (unconfirmed). The all-unconfirmed status across three stages indicates no specimens have been definitively assigned to specific die states. At 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc, 3.11 grams and 19.05 mm, the 1958 Wheat Cent was the last Philadelphia issue before the Memorial reverse debuted in 1959. Doubled die varieties from terminal-year issues attract particular collector interest because they represent the final hub doubling events in a long-running design series, adding numismatic significance beyond the variety itself.
