1958-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001
Error
Description
Documented by the Wexler Team and cross-referenced as CONECA 1-O-I-CW and Coppercoins 1958D-1DO-001, WDDO-001 on the 1958-D Lincoln Wheat Cent shows doubling north of the 9 in the date and lightly under the B in LIBERTY. A notable administrative comment accompanies this listing: the information was accidentally initially posted under WDDO-005 and has been correctly relocated to the WDDO-001 designation. Obverse die markers include die scratches running NE/SW through and below the 19 in the date. Reverse die markers show die scratches running ESE through the TES in STATES and the lower ERICA of AMERICA. The CONECA 1-O-I-CW classification identifies this as a Class I clockwise rotated hub doubling variety — the hub was slightly rotated clockwise between impressions, producing a rotational offset that affects design elements at varying intensities depending on their distance from the rotation center. The date area and LIBERTY are common diagnostic zones for Class I CW rotation on Lincoln Cents because their positions on the lower and left obverse place them where clockwise rotation generates visible displacement. The 1958-D Lincoln Wheat Cent was struck at the Denver Mint in 95% copper and 5% tin-and-zinc composition (3.11 grams, 19.05 mm), representing the final year of the beloved Wheat Cent reverse before its replacement by Frank Gasparro's Lincoln Memorial design in 1959. As WDDO-001, this variety holds the primary obverse doubled die catalog position for the 1958-D, and its multiple cross-references across CONECA, Coppercoins, and Wexler systems confirm its significance.
