Description

Submitted by Whaden Curtis and cross-referenced as CONECA 1-R-VI, this 1957 Roosevelt Dime WDDR-001 holds the lead catalog position for doubled die reverses on the date. Hub displacement created spread toward center on the letters IME of DIME, the right dot beside the M of UNUM, and the M itself — a Class VI compression doubling that pushes secondary impressions inward rather than outward. This inward spread produces letters that appear slightly thicker on their interior edges, with secondary outlines compressing design elements toward the coin's center. Cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 1957 10-cent WDDR-001, the variety targets specific reverse legend elements where the toward-center displacement is most visible. The 1957 Roosevelt Dime was struck in 90% silver at Philadelphia during the post-war era, when high demand generated large die populations across which hub-doubling anomalies could occur. The concentration of doubling on DIME and UNUM provides focused attribution points, and the Class VI designation indicates a specific hubbing mechanism distinct from the rotational or lateral shifts seen in other doubling classes. Die Markers: Obverse: Two die gouges in the field left of the chin. Reverse: Small die chip (dot) NE of the right dot. Submitted By: Whaden CurtisCross References: None known Obverse: Die clash at the bridge of the nose. Die scratch from the bridge of the nose NW into the field. Reverse: A north and a NNE die scratch from the inside of the first U in UNUM into the oak branch and leaves. Long die scratch NNW from the I of DIME through the US of PLURIBUS to the torch holder. SW die scratch from the bottom of the second T in STATES. Numerous die scratches above the top olive leaf.
