1957 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-001
Error
Description
Carrying the DDR-001 designation — the primary doubled die reverse for the date — this 1957 Roosevelt Dime exhibits extreme extra thickness on all lettering and most leaves, making it one of the most visually dramatic DDRs in the early Roosevelt series. Documented by VarietyVista with codes UVC-294 and DMR-005, the variety was struck in 90% silver at the Philadelphia Mint. The intensity of the doubling — described as extreme across all reverse legends — sets DDR-001 apart from the more subtle spread typical of most cataloged doubled dies. Under magnification, every letter of UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, ONE DIME, and E PLURIBUS UNUM shows measurable thickening, and the olive and torch leaves carry visible displacement. By Stage B the die develops light horizontal die scratches on the reverse in mid-die state, a die chip appears on Roosevelt's nose, and a die crack extends from the cheek to the rim at approximately the 1 o'clock position. John R. Sinnock's Roosevelt Dime design was in its ninth year of production, and 1957 represents one of the final years of the 90% silver composition before the Coinage Act of 1965 ended silver in circulating dimes.
