1957 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-006

Description

Identified by Wexler Variety ID 1957 1¢ WDDO-006, this Lincoln Wheat Cent doubled die obverse is best recognized by the extra eyelid visible below Lincoln's normal eyelid — a distinctive diagnostic that sets it apart from other 1957 varieties. Additional obverse die markers include a die scratch running northeast from the right side of the N in IN and vertical die scratches flanking both sides of the bust. On the reverse, die scratches run south-southeast from the right side of the left wheat ear toward the left of the C in CENT. The extra eyelid diagnostic is particularly useful because it can be detected at moderate magnification without specialized equipment, making this a rewarding variety for circulation searching. The 1957 Philadelphia Mint issue was among the final years of Wheat Cent production before the Memorial reverse debuted in 1959. Doubled die obverses from the last Wheat Cent years are actively collected, and the clear eyelid doubling on WDDO-006 provides an unmistakable attribution point.
