Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1957-D 10¢ WRPM-002, this Roosevelt Silver Dime displays a D/D Tilted (Rotated) repunched mintmark and is noted as a replacement listing because the original files were not present in the Bordner files — indicating that this catalog entry was reconstructed from available specimens after the original documentation was lost or unavailable. The obverse carries an extensive array of die scratches: a heavy east-west die scratch from under the bust extending to under JS (John Sinnock's initials) and the 19 in the date, a die scratch running north from the nose to the E in LIBERTY, and multiple north-south die scratches under the nose. The reverse shows numerous mostly north-south die scratches throughout, two parallel die scratches under ED in UNITED, a die scratch running through the top of ICA in AMERICA, and a die scratch through the middle of M in DIME. No additional cross-references to other cataloging systems are currently known. The sheer density of die scratches on both faces — more than eight distinct scratch features documented — suggests extensive die maintenance polishing was performed on this die pair, likely to remove clash marks or surface imperfections, creating an unusually comprehensive fingerprint of linear marks for attribution. The 1957-D Roosevelt Dime was struck at the Denver Mint in 90% silver composition weighing 2.50 grams with a 17.9 mm diameter. John R. Sinnock designed the Roosevelt obverse, with the torch, olive branch, and oak branch reverse design. The 1957-D had a mintage of approximately 113.4 million pieces, making it a readily available date in circulated grades for variety collectors searching for this distinctively scratch-marked die pair.
