1957-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-029
ErrorDescription
Bearing one of the most anatomically specific doubled die diagnostics in the Wheat Cent series, the 1957-D WDDO-029 displays an extra eyelid south of Lincoln's normal eyelid — a secondary contour created when the hub impressed the working die with slight vertical displacement on the portrait's facial detail. The extra eyelid diagnostic is prized by attributors because it resists confusion with die deterioration or strike doubling. Obverse die markers include a die scratch running between the W and E in WE, while the reverse carries horizontal die scratches through the upper T in CENT. Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1957-D 1¢ WDDO-029, the high sequence number reflects the extensive variety documentation effort for this Denver Mint date — the twenty-ninth distinct doubled die obverse identified from 1957-D working dies. Struck in 95% copper and 5% tin-and-zinc at 3.11 grams on Victor David Brenner's classic Lincoln portrait obverse. The 1957-D is a late-series Wheat Cent, produced just one year before the design was retired in favor of the Lincoln Memorial reverse in 1959. Examine the eyelid area under at least 5x magnification for the secondary contour south of the normal lid.
