1957-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-027

Description

Preserving an extra eyelid to the south of Lincoln's normal eyelid, WDDO-027 on the 1957-D Lincoln Wheat Cent documents hub doubling on one of the most reliable diagnostic areas for Lincoln Cent doubled die identification. The southward displacement indicates the hub's secondary impression was shifted downward, creating a distinct parallel line beneath the normal eyelid contour. Die markers on both sides support attribution: the obverse carries a gouge dot left of the 9 in the date, while the reverse exhibits vertical scratches through ATE of STATES and parallel scratches from the U in UNUM. These features provide multiple independent confirmation points beyond the doubling itself. The 1957-D holds special significance as the penultimate year of the Wheat Cent series — Denver's production of 1.051 billion cents set the all-time mintage record for the denomination's original reverse, replaced by the Lincoln Memorial design in 1959.
