1957-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-015

Description

Two distinctive obverse features characterize the 1957-D Lincoln Wheat Cent WDDO-015. First, doubling appears inside the upper curve of the 9 in the date. Second, an extra eyelid line is present below the normal eyelid on Lincoln's eye — a doubled eyelid effect that provides a compelling and unusual visual diagnostic. The Wexler Variety ID is 1957-D 1¢ WDDO-015. Four die markers document this variety across both sides of the coin. On the obverse, two strong parallel die gouges run north-northeast from the top of the bowtie. A die scratch runs north-northwest from the top of the T in LIBERTY. On the reverse, a die scratch runs southwest to northeast between the M in UNUM and the top of the right wheat ear. A die crack runs through the outer wheat kernels on the right wheat stalk. The doubled eyelid is an atypical doubling expression that makes this variety particularly interesting to collectors; eyelid doubling on Lincoln cents is uncommon enough that confirmed examples tend to attract attention. The date doubling inside the upper 9 provides the second confirmation point that supports full attribution.
