1957-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-004

Description

From the penultimate year of Wheat Cent production, the 1957-D WDDO-004 features an unusual doubled die characteristic: an extra eyelid visible below Lincoln's normal eyelid. Unlike most eyelid doubled dies that show the extra impression shifted to the northeast, this variety positions it below the original. The Wexler Variety designation 1957-D 1 cent WDDO-004 identifies this Denver Mint issue, which carries heavy die scratches running southwest to northeast between GOD and the top of the head, with numerous additional die scratches mostly in the same direction found throughout the obverse. A die chip appears in the lower B of LIBERTY. The reverse also shows numerous light die scratches mostly running north to south. This extensive network of die scratches across both sides, combined with the distinctive downward eyelid doubling, provides multiple attribution points.
