1957-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-012

Description

DDO-012 on the 1957-D Lincoln Wheat Cent exhibits a medium spread to the southwest on the BERTY of LIBERTY and on the date, with the doubling direction producing a characteristic shift in the legend text. Die markers are catalogued under UVC-1927 and DMR-036 in the VarietyVista reference. Die state progression is particularly well-documented with four stages: Stage A is Early Die State, currently unconfirmed; Stage B — Middle Die State on the reverse — is defined by a die gouge to the northwest of the last T of TRUST on the obverse; Stage C — Late Middle Die State on both sides — is defined by a die crack running down the back of the shoulder; Stage D is Late Die State, currently unconfirmed. The four-stage documentation reflects careful tracking of this die through a substantial portion of its production life.
