Description

Appearing on the Type 2 proof Franklin Half Dollar — with heavily frosted, cameo-contrast devices against mirrored fields — this 1956 WDDO-001 shares the same obverse die as the Type 1 counterpart but pairs it with a different reverse. The very strong Class VI spread toward center on LIBERTY and IN GOD remains identical, as does the Class II separation on WE TRUST and the date, since both types were struck from the same obverse carrying this dramatic doubling. The Type 2 diverges in visual presentation: heavy frosting on design elements accentuates the doubled letters by creating thicker, more sculptural edges that make secondary impressions more apparent against the mirror fields. The Type 2 finish, developing as dies accumulated frost through repeated striking, adds a desirability premium beyond the doubling itself. Collectors pursuing complete WDDO-001 representation seek both Type 1 and Type 2 examples, as the cameo contrast provides a distinctly different aesthetic expression of the same underlying die anomaly. Die Markers: Obverse: A small die gouge (dot) can be found on the lower left of the E in WE. A die scratch runs across the lower front of the bust. A die scratch runs across the upper Y in LIBERTY. A die chip can be found between the upper P and L of PLURIBUS. Die chips can be found between the eagle’s lower right wing feathers.
