1956 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-033

Description

Struck as a proof at Philadelphia, the 1956 Jefferson Nickel WDDR-033 exhibits Class II Distorted Hub Doubling with a close spread directed toward the center on E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, increasing slightly from left to right across the inscriptions. Timothy Wissert attributed this variety, which shows no significant obverse die markers. The reverse carries several diagnostic features: almost vertical die scratches through the left arch of Monticello, a vertical die gouge positioned between the lower second S of STATES and the O of OF, and nearly diagonal die scratches above the small left window. Proof die surfaces amplify the visibility of Class II distorted hub doubling because the mirrored fields provide high contrast against any displaced design elements. The left-to-right progression of the spread suggests a specific geometric relationship during the hubbing error. Collectors of proof Jefferson nickel varieties from the 1950s will find this variety documented across both Wexler and broader attribution references.
