1956 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-023

Description

Attributed to Gary G. Wagnon and cross-referenced as CONECA 9-R-II-C, this 1956 Proof Jefferson Nickel doubled die reverse exhibits Class II distorted hub doubling. A nice spread toward the center shows on E PLURIBUS UNUM, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, FIVE CENTS, and ELLO of MONTICELLO, with all spreads being constant across these design elements. On the obverse, an almost vertical die gouge appears in the hair east of the eye. Reverse die markers include a die dot in the center of the right arch, a curved die gouge inside the left arch, and a die gouge (dot) inside the upper portion of the B of PLURIBUS. Cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 1956 WDDR-023 Proof, the high sequence number reflects the depth of variety research on this date. Class II doubling results from a slight angular or rotational shift of the hub relative to the die between impressions, producing the characteristic spread toward center on affected design elements. Proof Jefferson Nickels from 1956 were struck at Philadelphia and feature the sharp detail and reflective surfaces that make doubled die attribution considerably easier than on business strikes.
