1956 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-018

Description

Exhibiting Class II distorted hub doubling with particularly attractive spread on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, this 1956 Proof Jefferson Nickel doubled die reverse also shows closer doubling on CENTS. Very nice visibility distinguishes this variety from more subtle entries in the 1956 proof DDR catalog. Attributed by John A. Wexler and cross-referenced as CONECA 5-R-II-C, this proof-only variety is designated Wexler Variety ID: 1956 WDDR-018 Proof. Reverse die markers include a die dot to the left of the long right window, a die dot on the right edge of the small left window, and a slanted die scratch extending from the upper left side of the small semicircular window. The 1956 proof was struck at Philadelphia during the era when proof sets were gaining broad collector popularity, and doubled die varieties on proof coinage carry added appeal because of the superior surface quality that makes doubling easier to examine under magnification. Eighteen documented doubled die reverses for this single proof date reflects substantial die variety research on mid-century Jefferson Nickels.
