1956 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-021

Description

Documented by VarietyVista with codes UVC-938 and DMR-025, this 1956 Proof Jefferson Nickel carries a doubled die reverse with light spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM and OF AMERICA. Struck in 75% copper and 25% nickel at the Philadelphia Mint as a proof issue, multiple times on polished planchets using polished dies, this coin was produced for collectors during a period when proof set sales were surging. The variety has been tracked across progressive die states: by Stage B the reverse shows numerous die scratches in mid-die state, and a die scratch connects the lower TIC of MONTICELLO, providing a useful attribution marker. By Stage C both reverse and obverse reach late-mid die state. The light spread on the legend elements indicates a minor shift between hub impressions during die manufacture — enough to meet cataloging standards but requiring careful examination to detect. The DDR-021 sequence number reflects the substantial number of doubled die reverses documented for 1956 proof nickels, a consequence of the high die output required to serve growing collector demand throughout the 1950s.
