1956 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-019
Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista as DDR-019 with universal variety code UVC-936 and die marriage record DMR-023, this 1956 proof Jefferson nickel exhibits a light spread producing extra thickness on E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Four die stages chart the production life of this proof die pair. Stage A in early die state and Stage B at mid-die state both have unconfirmed markers. By Stage C in late die state, a die scratch connects the lower portions of NTIC in MONTICELLO, and a second die scratch extends from the first O of MONTICELLO to the E of FIVE, while the obverse has also reached late die state. Stage D sees both the reverse and obverse at very late die state. Proof Jefferson nickel doubled dies from the 1950s are sought after by variety collectors who specialize in proof-only errors, since these dies saw limited production runs compared to business strikes. The connecting die scratch between NTIC in Stage C serves as the most reliable attribution marker for confirming this variety beyond the subtle legend doubling that defines the DDR classification.
