Description

Occupying the third position in the obverse doubled die census for the 1956 Lincoln wheat cent proof, DDO-003 presents a multi-layered doubling profile: medium spread on IN GOD WE TRUST, light spread on the date, and light rotational spread on LIBERTY. The combination of linear spread on the motto and rotational spread on LIBERTY suggests a complex hub misalignment where both translational displacement and slight pivoting occurred between hub impressions, creating different doubling characteristics at different locations across Victor David Brenner's obverse. VarietyVista assigned identifiers UVC-1868 and DMR-005, documenting three die stages: Stage A at early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B where both obverse and reverse surfaces have reached mid die state, and Stage C where both have progressed to late die state — providing a fully confirmed progression from MDS through LDS. The comments identify this as a proof issue, placing DDO-003 among the varieties struck using polished dies on specially prepared planchets at the Philadelphia Mint. Proof Lincoln cents in 1956 were produced as part of proof sets with a mintage of approximately 669,384 sets, a modest quantity that limits the total population of any proof-only variety. The 1956 date stands in the penultimate full production year of the wheat reverse design, which would be replaced by Frank Gasparro's Lincoln Memorial reverse in 1959.
