1956 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-004

Description

Attributed as WDDR-004 and cross-referenced as CONECA 15-R-II-C(3), this 1956 Proof Jefferson Nickel reverse variety displays Class II distorted hub doubling on E PLURIBUS UNUM, with the spread increasing progressively from left to right across the inscription. What makes this variety particularly interesting is the close tripling visible on the lower portions of the letters in UNUM, where three distinct impressions can be detected—the parenthetical (3) in the CONECA designation reflects this triple-impression characteristic. Proof Jefferson nickels of the 1950s were struck at the Philadelphia Mint with polished dies and planchets, and the mirror-like fields can make hub doubling easier to detect under proper lighting. Obverse die markers include a die gouge on Jefferson's forehead and another gouge to the left of his eye. On the reverse, a strong die gouge appears in the upper portion of the M in UNUM. The left-to-right progression of the spread is a hallmark of Class II distortion, where the hub flex increases toward one side during the impression process.
