1956-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-012
Error
Description
Denver's 1956 cent production reached a staggering 1,098,201,100 pieces — surpassing one billion from a single facility in a single year, the highest Wheat Cent mintage ever recorded for any mint. That extraordinary output required an enormous complement of working dies, and each die sunk from the master hub represented another opportunity for positional misalignment between successive hub impressions. WDDO-012 is the twelfth doubled die obverse cataloged for the 1956-D issue, a variety count that directly reflects this unprecedented production scale. On Lincoln Wheat Cents, hub doubling manifests on Victor David Brenner's obverse portrait and the surrounding inscriptions — IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, and the date — where a secondary hub impression transferred at a slight offset during die manufacture. Identifying such varieties requires methodical examination under magnification, comparing the suspect coin against known diagnostic photographs. Cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 1956-D 1¢ WDDO-012.
