1956-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-008
Error
Description
Identified by the Wexler Team and carrying cross-reference Wexler Variety ID: 1956-D 1¢ WDDO-008, this doubled die obverse on the 1956-D Lincoln Wheat cent emerged from one of the final years of the classic Wheat reverse design. Denver produced over 1.09 billion cents in 1956, the highest single-year mintage in the series up to that point, meaning an extraordinary number of working dies were consumed and the statistical likelihood of hubbing anomalies was correspondingly high. Eight cataloged DDO varieties for the 1956-D is actually a relatively modest count given the mintage, suggesting either that the hubbing process at Denver was well-controlled that year or that additional undiscovered varieties may still await identification. The late Wheat cent era (1955-1958) is particularly rich in doubled die interest because of the famous 1955 Doubled Die Obverse — the most celebrated Lincoln cent variety — which focused collector attention on the Wheat series' final years. WDDO-008 on the 1956-D is far more subtle than its famous 1955 predecessor, but it represents part of the broader catalog of hubbing anomalies that variety researchers have documented across the Wheat cent's final production period. Collectors of this era benefit from the enormous surviving population, which ensures that dedicated roll-searching can eventually yield properly attributed specimens.
