1955 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-003

Description

Exhibiting a graduated multi-zone spread pattern, DDO-003 on the 1955 Franklin Half Dollar presents medium extra thickness on LIBERTY alongside light extra thickness on the date and IN GOD WE TRUST. James Wiles reported this variety. The intensity disparity — medium on LIBERTY but light on the date and motto — reveals that the hub displacement vector aligned most favorably with LIBERTY's position on the die face, producing the greatest visible thickening there while generating subtler broadening at the date and IN GOD WE TRUST, which occupy different radial and angular positions relative to the displacement axis. This graduated pattern serves as a built-in authentication signature: a genuine DDO-003 must show perceptibly stronger doubling on LIBERTY than on the flanking elements, and any specimen displaying uniform intensity across all three areas would warrant reconsideration against other catalog numbers. On John R. Sinnock's Franklin Half Dollar obverse, LIBERTY arcs across the top above Benjamin Franklin's portrait, IN GOD WE TRUST appears at the lower right, and the date sits at the base — distributing the three affected areas across much of the obverse die face. The 1955 Franklin Half Dollar was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 90% silver at 12.5 grams during one of the later production years of the series, which ran from 1948 through 1963 before giving way to the Kennedy Half Dollar. Sinnock's right-facing portrait of Franklin, adapted from the Jean-Antoine Houdon bust, provides a large central device against which the surrounding text doubling can be evaluated. Begin examination at LIBERTY under 7x magnification where the medium extra thickness is most readily apparent, then confirm the lighter doubling on the date and motto.
