Description

Second in the documented sequence of repunched mintmarks for the 1955 San Francisco Mint Roosevelt Dime, this variety preserves evidence of the manual mintmark application process that was standard practice at the United States Mint through 1989. Before that date, individual mintmark letters were hand-punched into each working die using a small steel punch and mallet, and imprecise placement, double-tapping, or repositioning produced the overlapping mintmark impressions that define RPM varieties.
