Description

Distinct from the famous 1955 DDO-001 business strike, this 1955 Proof Lincoln Wheat Cent DDO-004 carries medium spread on IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, and the date — and remarkably pairs with DDR-004 on the reverse, making it a dual-sided doubled die variety. Both the obverse and reverse dies independently developed doubling during their separate hubbing operations, an uncommon convergence that earned dual Cherrypickers designations as FS-103 and FS-801. Die markers UVC-1843 and DMR-006 identify the variety within the VarietyVista system. Three die stages track the die pair: Stage A at Early Die State shows a die gouge on the upper collar and the reverse already listed as DDR-004 at EDS, Stage B reaches Mid Die State, and Stage C documents Late Die State. The proof format means these coins were struck on polished planchets with specially prepared dies at the Philadelphia Mint for collector sets, and the mirror-like fields make the medium spread on the motto and date easier to detect under magnification. Collectors seeking this variety receive two attributable features on a single coin — a compelling combination for proof Wheat Cent specialists.
