1955 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

Struck from Proof dies, this 1955 Franklin half dollar WDDO-001 (Wexler Variety ID: 1955 50¢ Pr WDDO-001) documents hub doubling spreading toward the center on LIBERTY, Franklin's nose, the 55 in the date, and slightly on IN GOD WE TRUST. John R. Sinnock's Franklin half dollar was produced in 90% silver through 1963, with Proof sets issued at Philadelphia for collectors throughout the series. The obverse die marker is specific: a small die gouge (dot) on the bottom center of the E in LIBERTY. The reverse carries a die scratch east-northeast from the lower right of the second S in STATES, a die scratch southwest-to-northeast at the lower left end of the bell yoke, and a die scratch south-southwest to north-northeast on the lower feather just left of the eagle's right leg. Numerous fine die scratches appear throughout the bell and yoke. Proof surface finishes interact differently with raking light than business-strike reverses, a consideration when examining this variety. The WDDO-001 designation marks this as the primary Wexler-attributed doubled die obverse for the 1955 Proof Franklin half dollar.
