Description

Sharing its date with the legendary 1955 DDO-001 — one of the most famous error coins in American numismatics — the 1955 DDO-010 is a lesser-known variety exhibiting light spread confined to the BE of LIBERTY. While far more subtle than its celebrated sibling, DDO-010 presents an unusual die stage pattern that merits attention. Cataloged under UVC-1849 / DMR-012 by VarietyVista, the die stages reveal a striking mismatch between obverse and reverse wear: Stage A pairs an Early Die State obverse with a Late Die State reverse, and Stage B pairs a Mid Die State obverse with a Very Late Die State reverse. Stage C reaches Late Die State (unconfirmed). This asymmetry means the reverse die was already heavily worn when this obverse die entered service, indicating the Mint paired a fresh obverse with a near-exhausted reverse. Collectors encountering Stage A specimens will notice the contrast between crisp obverse detail and softened reverse features. The two-letter diagnostic zone on BE requires careful magnification to confirm the secondary image.
