Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista as DDO-003 with the Universal Variety Code UVC-1842 and Die Marker Record DMR-005, this doubled die obverse variety appears on a 1955 Lincoln Wheat cent struck at the Philadelphia Mint. The 1955 Wheat cent is composed of 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc, weighing 3.11 grams with a 19 mm diameter. While the famous 1955 DDO-001 is one of the most iconic error coins in American numismatics, DDO-003 presents a distinctly different and far more subtle doubling pattern. The primary diagnostics show light extra thickness on LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the date, lacking the dramatic separation visible on the celebrated DDO-001. Multiple die stages have been documented: Stage A is early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B shows a light die clash at Lincoln's throat in early-to-mid die state with the reverse in late die state, Stage C is mid die state (unconfirmed), and Stage D is late die state (unconfirmed).
