Description

Sharing its famous date with the legendary 1955 Doubled Die Obverse, PC-1c-1955-01R documents a reverse pre-cud on the 1955 Philadelphia Lincoln Wheat Cent. A pre-cud represents the intermediate stage of die failure: the rim section has cracked and begun to separate but has not yet broken free, producing a raised area on struck coins that retains some distorted design detail rather than displaying the completely featureless plateau of a full cud. This variety also exhibits a reverse die crack, visible as a thin raised line extending across the reverse design — evidence of additional stress fracturing within the same die. The 1955 cent was struck in standard bronze at a Philadelphia mintage of approximately 330 million pieces. While the date is most celebrated for its dramatic hub doubling error, die failures of all types occurred across the 1955 production run, and this pre-cud records one die's progression toward terminal fracture on the reverse. Pre-cuds are rarer in collector hands than full cuds, since the transitional stage may persist for only a limited number of strikes before the fragment detaches entirely.
