1955 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-009

Description

From the same year as the legendary 1955 DDO-001, this ninth documented doubled die obverse for the 1955 Lincoln Wheat Cent is far subtler than its famous sibling but nonetheless carries diagnostic die markers across both sides. Obverse indicators include a die scratch running south-southeast from the bottom of the back of the head to the top of the shoulder, die scratches running east-northeast from the top of the T and Y in LIBERTY, a die scratch from the bottom of the chin to the vest left of the bottom of the 1, and a die scratch running north-northeast from the upper front of the forehead just right of the front curl of hair. No distinctive reverse markers have been noted. Cross-referenced as CONECA 10-O-V (indicating a Class V Pivoted Hub mechanism) and Coppercoins 1955P-1DO-008, this variety is attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID: 1955 1¢ WDDO-009. The Class V pivot mechanism produces rotational displacement distinct from the Class I rotated hub doubling that created the iconic 1955 DDO.
