1955 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002
ErrorDescription
A proof-only Jefferson Nickel variety from 1955 — the final year proof coins were struck at the original Philadelphia proof facility before a brief hiatus — this WDDO-002 exhibits Class II distorted hub doubling on LIBERTY, the star, and the date. Class II doubling results from distortion within the hub rather than misalignment between hub and die, producing spread patterns that differ from the uniform lateral displacement seen in other classes. The proof striking process, with polished planchets and multiple impressions at higher pressure, preserves even subtle hub distortion with clarity unmatched by business strikes. Die markers concentrate on Felix Schlag's Monticello reverse: a die gouge appears as a dot below the E of WE, another sits below the L of PLURIBUS, a die dot to the left of the upper portion of the first column, and a die scratch to the upper right of the left long window. These architectural reference points — columns, windows, and inscription frame — provide the precise coordinates Jefferson Nickel researchers rely on for attribution. Attributed by the Wexler Team, this proof variety rewards collectors who examine their 1955 proof sets carefully.
