1955-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-001
Error
Description
Documented by VarietyVista, the 1955-D RPM-001 Lincoln Wheat Cent holds the primary RPM listing designation for its date-mint combination, indicating it was either the first documented or the most significant repunched mintmark variety for the 1955 Denver Mint issue. Die markers UVC-532 / DMR-002 track three stages with an interesting early-stage detail: Stage A features a die scratch running south from the T of LIBERTY while both obverse and reverse are at EDS — this die scratch, present from the earliest documented strikes, may have been introduced during the die preparation process rather than from production wear. Stage B shows both obverse and reverse at MDS, and Stage C progresses to LDS (unconfirmed). The 1955 date holds special significance in Lincoln Cent collecting because it is the year of the famous 1955 Doubled Die Obverse — arguably the most celebrated U.S. coin variety of the 20th century — which has drawn intense collector scrutiny to all 1955-dated cent varieties, including RPMs from the Denver Mint that might otherwise receive less attention. The Lincoln Wheat Cent was designed by Victor David Brenner for the obverse, struck at the Denver Mint in 1955 in the standard bronze composition of 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc, weighing 3.11 grams with a 19.05 mm diameter. The 1955-D had a mintage of approximately 563.3 million pieces. As the RPM-001 designation for this date, the variety occupies the primary catalog position within the 1955-D repunched mintmark population, making it the default starting point for collectors building a comprehensive set of 1955 Denver Mint Lincoln Cent varieties.
