Description

Occupying the same East-Left position as die 008 — Hardy code 55D-4EL+ — this 1955 Denver Mint BIE variety shares its position classification but originated from a completely different die with its own unique fracture geometry. The "+" suffix indicates one additional feature beyond the primary bar, matching die 008's minimal supplementary deterioration. When two dies share a Hardy position code, the distinguishing diagnostics are found in the precise dimensions and angle of the raised bar, the exact location of the supplementary feature, and any die markers — scratches, polish lines, or clash marks — that fingerprint the individual die. The Cohen Index has not cataloged this variety, making Hardy the sole reference. Five 1955-D dies are documented at the 4EL position (dies 008, 013, 027B, 029, and 037), with additional-feature counts ranging from the simple "+" on this die to +41 on die 029 and +39 on die 037. This spread illustrates how dies at the same position can follow wildly divergent deterioration paths depending on steel quality, striking pressure, and how long each die remained in service at Denver's high-volume production lines.
