Description

Among the die varieties documented for the 1955-D Lincoln Wheat Cent, RPM-013 stands out for its progression of precisely characterized die-chip markers across two of its three documented stages. VarietyVista assigns this variety codes UVC-1121 and DMR-015. The mintmark displacement is D/D Rotated Clockwise, an unusual orientation for a repunched mintmark in which the secondary impression is rotated rather than simply offset in a cardinal direction. Stage A (EDS) is marked by a die chip off the upper right corner of the horizontal crossbar of the E in ONE — a crisp early marker. Stage B (MDS) shifts the diagnostic to a die chip within the upper left wheat grains — a separate location from the Stage A chip, confirming die progression. Stage C (LDS) is unconfirmed. The rotated nature of the mintmark repunching makes RPM-013 visually distinctive under close examination, as the secondary D impression appears at an angular offset rather than a straightforward directional displacement. The 1955-D Lincoln Cent was the last year Denver would strike wheat cents; 1959 brought the Memorial reverse, making 1955-D a transitional year in the series.
