1955-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-007

Description

Documented by VarietyVista with die marker codes UVC-538 and DMR-008, this 1955-D Lincoln Wheat Cent RPM-007 exhibits a repunched D mintmark produced at the Denver Mint when the engraver's initial mintmark punch placement required correction. Three die stages are documented: Stage A in early die state (EDS), unconfirmed; Stage B with both obverse and reverse at mid-die-state (MDS); and Stage C at late die state (LDS), also unconfirmed. The MDS confirmation for Stage B establishes the intermediate die condition at which this variety is most commonly encountered, with the die showing moderate usage wear but retaining sufficient detail for clear attribution. The 1955-D Lincoln Wheat Cent occupies a historically notable position in the Wheat Cent series because 1955 is also the year of the famous 1955 Doubled Die Obverse from the Philadelphia Mint — arguably the most famous U.S. coin variety — though this Denver Mint RPM variety is an entirely separate phenomenon from that Philadelphia issue. The cent was struck in bronze composition (95% copper, 5% tin and zinc) weighing 3.11 grams with a diameter of 19.05 mm at the Denver Mint. Victor David Brenner designed the obverse portrait, and the wheat ears reverse was in its penultimate decade of service before the 1959 transition to the Memorial reverse.
