Description

Documented by VarietyVista with die marker codes UVC-537 and DMR-007, this 1955-D Lincoln Wheat Cent RPM-006 features a repunched D mintmark from the Denver Mint, representing the sixth cataloged D/D variety for this historically important date. Three die stages are documented: Stage A with both obverse and reverse in early die state (EDS); Stage B at mid-die-state (MDS), unconfirmed; and Stage C at late die state (LDS), also unconfirmed. The EDS confirmation for Stage A means the earliest documented specimens show both dies in fresh condition with the repunched mintmark at maximum clarity — the ideal state for attribution study before progressive wear begins to soften the secondary D impression. The 1955-D Lincoln Wheat Cent was struck at the Denver Mint in bronze composition (95% copper, 5% tin and zinc) weighing 3.11 grams with a 19.05 mm diameter. The year 1955 is indelibly associated with the famous Philadelphia Mint 1955 Doubled Die Obverse, the most widely recognized U.S. coin variety, but the Denver Mint produced its own suite of collectible varieties including this RPM-006 and several other repunched mintmark varieties. Victor David Brenner designed the obverse portrait, and the wheat ears reverse was in its penultimate decade — the 1955 date sits four years before the 1959 transition to the Lincoln Memorial reverse. The DMR-007 die marker reference provides the diagnostic features needed to confirm this specific die under examination, and comparison between RPM-006 and its catalog neighbors (RPM-005 and RPM-007) requires attention to these distinct die marker patterns to ensure correct attribution among closely numbered varieties.
