Description

A combo variety carrying attributions on both sides, WOMM-003 on the 1955-D Jefferson Nickel shows D/D/S (D over D over S) on the obverse, documenting a die that received an S mint mark punch before being overpunched twice with D. The reverse of this same die is independently listed as Wexler doubled die WDDR-004, exhibiting close Class II spread toward the center on OF AMERICA. Obverse die markers include parallel die scratches running north to south above the nose. Reverse markers comprise die scratches from north-northwest to south-southeast through and to the right of the D in UNITED, plus a die scratch running southeast from the bottom right of the M in UNUM. The D/D/S over mint mark attribution reveals a production error where a die intended for San Francisco was redirected to Denver and re-punched, a process that occasionally occurred when mint mark logistics required reassignment. Cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 1955-D 5¢ WOMM-003.
