1955-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-004

Description

While the 1955 Philadelphia doubled die reverse cent dominates collector awareness, the Denver Mint produced its own noteworthy doubled die varieties on the Jefferson Nickel, including this WDDR-004 reverse. Close Class II doubling is visible on UNUM and AMERICA, the result of distorted hub impressions during die-making. This die also displays an over mint mark variety, cross-referenced as WOMM-003 and CONECA OMM#3, meaning the D mint mark shows evidence of being punched over a different letter. Obverse die markers include die scratches left of Jefferson's eye and a slanted die scratch below the star. On the reverse, a die scratch extends from the lower right M of UNUM and a slanted die scratch appears inside the D of UNITED. The combination of a doubled die reverse and an over mint mark on the same die is uncommon and makes this variety attractive to specialists who collect both error types. Cross-referenced as CONECA 3-R-II and Wexler Variety ID: 1955-D WDDR-004. Jefferson Nickel varieties from the 1950s remain affordable compared to their cent counterparts.
