1955-D Over Mint Mark WOMM-002

Description

Before the adoption of single-squeeze hubbing technology, individual mintmark punches were hand-applied to each working die, and this 1955-D Jefferson Nickel preserves evidence of an over mint mark — where one mintmark letter was punched over a different or incorrectly positioned mintmark. Obverse die markers reveal several die scratches running north to south to the left of the nose, lips, and chin, providing reliable attribution diagnostics. The reverse carries extensive marking: die scratches running WSW to ENE below the E PL of E PLURIBUS, short horizontal scratches above the left end of the Monticello roof, and additional scratches distributed throughout the reverse field — evidence of considerable die finishing or progressive wear.
