Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista as OMM-009 with die marker references UVC-411 and DMR-012, this 1955-D Jefferson nickel displays a D/S over mintmark, where a Denver D punch was impressed over a San Francisco S punch on the working die. Over mintmarks of this type occurred when dies originally prepared for one mint facility were repurposed for another by overpunching the mintmark, a practice that the Mint eventually discontinued. Three die stages have been identified. Stage A at early die state and Stage B at mid die state both remain unconfirmed. Stage C at late die state is well documented, showing a die scratch running through the last O of MONTICELLO to the I of AMERICA, a die scratch extending southwest from the upper C of CENTS, die scratches from the F of FIVE to the N of MONTICELLO, and the obverse at late die state. The D/S overpunching is best observed under magnification where traces of the original S serifs remain visible beneath the broader D punch.
