1955-D Over Mint Mark OMM-008

Description

Among the scarcer over mint mark varieties in the Jefferson Nickel series, this 1955-D OMM-008 shows a D punched over a centered S — evidence that a die prepared for San Francisco was repurposed for Denver. Cataloged by VarietyVista under UVC-410 and DMR-011, three die stages document the die's life. Stage A presents die scratches SE from the M of UNUM, east from the S of CENT, and from C of AMERICA to the building base, with the obverse in early die state. Stage B develops a strong die scratch south from M of UNUM to the roof at MDS. Stage C finds both sides in late die state. The D/S centered orientation means the Denver punch landed squarely over the San Francisco letter, requiring careful examination to separate the overlapping serifs. Over mint mark varieties arise from the Mint's practice of recycling dies between facilities rather than discarding them, a procedure employed when production demands shifted between branches.
