1955-D Over Mint Mark OMM-006

Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista, this 1955-D Jefferson Nickel exhibits an over mint mark variety where a Denver D punch was applied over a previously placed different mintmark, documenting inter-facility die transfer. Die markers UVC-408 / DMR-009 track three stages: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with a die scratch from left dome to left balcony at LDS, die scratches above the right roof, a die gouge dot in the lower C of CENT, die gouges above the horizontal bar of the L of PLURIBUS, and obverse at MDS; Stage C with reverse and obverse at LDS. The multiple Monticello architectural scratches and inscription gouges at Stage B provide comprehensive die fingerprinting across the reverse. Composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, Felix Schlag's design was struck at Denver. The sixth cataloged OMM for this date suggests significant die sharing between facilities in 1955.
