Cataloged by VarietyVista under die markers UVC-1137 and DMR-022, this 1954 San Francisco Lincoln wheat cent carries a repunched S mintmark. Stage A in early die state presents the most complete set of diagnostics: a die scratch running from the mintmark to the 4 of the date, a die gouge outside the upper right wheat tip at early-mid die state, a die chip on the T of CENT, a die chip in the right wheat lines, and a die crack in the right wheat grains. Stages B and C at mid and late die state respectively remain unconfirmed. The die scratch connecting the mintmark to the date digit provides an unusually direct visual bridge between two widely separated areas of the die, making it a distinctive diagnostic. San Francisco wheat cents from 1954 were among the lower-mintage issues of the final decade of wheat ear reverse production, which ended in 1958 when the Lincoln Memorial reverse debuted. The concentration of die chips and cracks in the right wheat area alongside the repunched mintmark suggests this die experienced significant stress during its service life.
