Description
Documented by VarietyVista, this San Francisco Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent records a reverse die change mid-production, with die markers spanning two pairings. UVC-528 / DMR-018 covers Stage A with several circular die gouges under bust at VEDS and a die scratch from E of STATES south through last A of AMERICA to wheat stem at EMDS. UVC-529 / DMR-019 covers Stages B through D: Stage B with obverse at EDS, reverse die changed at EDS, numerous die scratches on reverse, and a die scratch from last S of STATES southwest through last A of AMERICA to wheat stem; Stage C at MDS (unconfirmed); Stage D at LDS (unconfirmed). The circular gouges under the bust at VEDS and the die scratch tracing STATES-to-AMERICA-to-wheat on both reverse dies provide distinctive attribution markers. Composed of 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc at 3.11 grams, struck at San Francisco.
