1954-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-008

Description

Documented by VarietyVista, this San Francisco Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent tracks five progressive die states with damage accumulating across both the obverse portrait and reverse wheat design. Die markers UVC-523 / DMR-013: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with obverse at MDS, a die crack in lower right wheat grains at MDS, and a die scratch northeast from upper E of AMERICA; Stage C with obverse at LMDS and a die crack in left wheat lines at LMDS; Stage D with die scratches north-south on obverse, die chips in upper and lower right wheat grains at LDS; Stage E with obverse at LDS and a die chip on T of CENT at LDS. The five-stage progression from EDS through LDS documents an above-average die service life. Composed of 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc at 3.11 grams and 19.05 mm, the 1954-S had a mintage of approximately 96.2 million, one of the lower San Francisco cent outputs of the decade.
