1954-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-003

Description

Recorded by VarietyVista, this 1954-S Wheat Cent features die markers UVC-516 / DMR-006 with distinctive early-state diagnostic markers. Stage A at EDS reveals a small die chip on the coat behind the tie and a die gouge from the E of UNITED to the M of AMERICA, both present from the die's earliest known state. Stage B at MDS with obverse and reverse showing moderate wear. Stage C at LDS (unconfirmed). The die gouge spanning from UNITED to AMERICA across the reverse is an unusually long marker, tracing a path across multiple design elements. Composed of 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc, weighing 3.11 grams with a 19.05 mm diameter. The 1954-S was among the final San Francisco Mint Wheat Cent issues, as the facility ceased cent production after 1955. Each working die received its S mintmark through manual punch application at the Philadelphia Mint before shipment west.
