1954 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001
Error
Description
Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1954 10¢ Pr WDDO-001, this proof Roosevelt Silver Dime carries multiple cross-references including CONECA 1-O-VI and Cherrypickers FS-10-1954-101 — a Fivaz-Stanton designation confirming its significance as a variety worth searching for in circulation and proof sets. Extra thickness is visible on the designer's initials JS (for John R. Sinnock), IN GOD WE TRUST, and the date, indicating a hub displacement that affected inscription elements across the obverse die face. Obverse die markers include a heavy die chip on the bottom of the 4 in the date — a substantial marker that aids quick field identification. Reverse markers include a light die scratch running east-northeast from the right center of the E in STATES through the last S in STATES, along with a small die chip in the field at the right center of the F in OF. Additional obverse attribution points include a curving die scratch below the TR in TRUST and a die scratch running southeast from the upper right of the B in LIBERTY, with circular die scratches found throughout the obverse. As a proof strike from the Philadelphia Mint, this coin was produced on specially polished planchets using polished dies, yielding mirror-like fields that make even subtle doubling more visible against the reflective surface. The 1954 proof Roosevelt Dime was struck in 90% silver composition at 2.50 grams with a diameter of 17.9 mm. The Class VI (Distorted Hub Doubling) classification under CONECA indicates the doubling resulted from a combination of pivot and spread during the hubbing process, creating the extra thickness pattern visible on multiple design elements.
