1954-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-003

Description

Attributed by VarietyVista as UVC-260, DMR-004, this 1954 Denver Mint Roosevelt Dime shows a repunched mintmark with a D/D Rotated CCW (counterclockwise) orientation. The initial D punch was applied at a counterclockwise-rotated angle before being corrected to the final upright position, leaving a tilted secondary impression that is diagnostically distinctive. Three die stages have been recorded: Stage A (early die state), Stage B (mid-die state), and Stage C (late die state). Rotated counterclockwise RPMs are less frequently encountered than simple directional shifts, making RPM-003 stand out among the repunched mintmark varieties cataloged for the 1954-D Roosevelt Dime. The angular displacement of the initial impression creates a diagnostic pattern distinct from the northward shift seen on RPM-001 for the same date. Struck in 90% silver (0.900 fine) at the Denver Mint, the 1954-D carries John R. Sinnock's portrait design introduced in 1946. Hand-punching of mintmarks continued at all Mint facilities through this period, and the rotated counterclockwise orientation on RPM-003 demonstrates the range of positional errors that occurred.
