Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1954-D 1¢ WDDO-005 with no other known cross-references, this Denver Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent displays a doubled eyelid — an extra eyelid visible below the normal eyelid on Victor David Brenner's portrait of Abraham Lincoln. No significant die markers have been noted on either the obverse or reverse, making the doubled eyelid itself the primary attribution characteristic. Doubled eyelid varieties represent one of the most anatomically precise forms of hub doubling in American numismatics: the secondary hub impression offset Lincoln's facial features just enough to create a second, displaced eyelid line below the primary one, while the broader facial contours may show no other detectable doubling. This extreme localization occurs because the eyelid — a single fine engraved line on the die — is among the most displacement-sensitive features on the obverse, capable of registering hub offset that falls below the detection threshold on the larger, bolder design elements surrounding it. The Lincoln Wheat Cent (1909-1958) features Brenner's right-facing portrait with sufficient facial detail that the eyelid area provides a reliable diagnostic zone for this class of variety. The 1954-D was struck at the Denver Mint in bronze composition (95% copper, 5% tin and zinc) at 3.11 grams during the late Wheat Cent era, four years before the transition to Frank Gasparro's Lincoln Memorial reverse in 1959. WDDO-005's fifth catalog position indicates at least four other doubled die obverses were documented for the 1954-D before this eyelid variety was cataloged. Examination requires 10x or higher magnification focused directly on Lincoln's eye area, looking for the secondary eyelid line situated below and parallel to the primary eyelid.
